Kalotaszentkirály

     Kalotaszentkirály is situated in the North-Western part of Romania.The village is in the Huedin basin and it is blockaded by the Erdélyi Szigethegység and the North Part of the Western Carpathians in the North and the South Western parts. In the rgion the highest aces? is the Vigyázó (Vlădeasa) 1836 m. The landscape is very beautiful, (so it is adequate for varied programs): mountains, forests, chops, waterfalls, dripstone caves and icecaves. The settlement is part of the Kalotaszeg region that is famous for:the folk architecture, embroidery, weaving, furniture painting. The inhabitants preserve the folk costumes from the ancestors, the folk music, folk songs and folk dance.

In the village you can visit:

• the belfry, King Mátyás with a contemporary belfry (1481)
King Mátyás (1458 -1490) was the king of Hungary in the middle ages, when Transylvania belonged to Hungary.He is considered to be one of Hungary’s most important kings, a lot of folktale and legend keeps his memory alive.During his government he fought the Turkish. He played an important role in developing the culture, his court in Buda and Visegrád became the centre of the European renaissance.In that time he had the second biggest library in the world: there were 2000-2500 books (corvins).

Ady Endre was born in Érmindszent (today Adyfalva) in Romania, in 1872 and died in 1919.He is considered to be one of the most important poets of the XX.th century.He was important in journalism and politics too. He wrote poems about love, his homeland, human existence, freedom, equality, belief and caducity.

I.King Saint Stephen (975- 1038) was the first Christian Hungarian king.Under his government by the union of the Hungarian strips, he established the Hungarian state in the Carpathian basin.He organized the Hungarian and Christian church too.

Accommodation and meal

     At Kalotaszentkirály can be accommodated 300 guests.The quarters are different, the tourists can be accommodated in houses with hosts, or in houses without hosts.For students there is a third choice: the boarding school, but only at weekends and in holidays.
     You can have the meal in different ways.Breakfast at the host where you sleep, but lunches and dinners can be collective, every member of the group eats at the same place with the others.

Programs

1.Cake (kürtőskalács) baking <<<<<<
     The tourists have the opportunity to participate in cake baking, and after lunch they can eat the cake, which was partially made by them.
The “kürtőskalács” is a traditional cake in the centre of Romania, and you can taste it at Kalotaszentkirály and learn the way to make them. It got its name from the stone pipe (kürtő).
      In the past it was made for festivities (weddings,christening).
Now a variety of cakes exist, the most popular is with frosting, nuts, coco and cinnamon.
     This activity is in mid morning so you can insert it among other activities.

Price: 5€/cake (min. 10 pieces)
If you want more than one, you can ask for it.


2.Folk crafts <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
      Kalotaszentkirály is famous for the folk crafts that characterized the village from the past. The guests can look at the falk crafts or they can even participate. The tourists can be acquainted with the following crafts:wood-carving, the residents deal with it and they do beautiful works like furniture, architectural elements, ornaments, wooden front doors and a lot of other things. People who live in the Kalotaszeg region spin different things.The tourist can learn about their traditional spinning and sewing. The tourists can notice the forger’s occupation as well.

3.Folkdance education<<<<<<<<<<<
     The residents have folk music and folk dance beside the folk costume. The guests have the possibility to learn folk dance, unless they don’t want to,in this case they can stand by and watch the traditional folk dancers.

4.Cutting the pig<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
     Cutting the pig is a specific activity in our country in winter time.
     Every pig “cutting” starts with the arrival of the pig catchers, who firstly drink the hard drink (palinka), a specific drink in our country.After that the pig will be killed, it will be cleaned up and the guests can taste the ear, tail and roasted blood with onion.
     At the preparing of the black pudding,liver wurst and sausages the tourist can assist.
In the evening the tourists will participate in the collective dinner with the spirit? of the folk music.


5.Horse tourism at Kalotaszeg<<<<<
     The activity takes place in Sztána, this village borders the Vlădeasa (Vlegyásza, Vigyázó) mountain.
In this territory there are pastures and forrests that are suitable for horseback riding.
The owner of the stud is De Martin Lajos, veterinarian who keeps a specific kind of horses.He shows the guests how to ride horses, and when the guests are ready, he takes them hiking on horseback.
     The stud has 25 horses at this moment.
In recent years, a group of youngsters exercise tactics on horseback (projectile, sidearms usage, archery, strategy). At the request of the tourists they deliver a performance.


There are other programs:

-organizing groups for horseback riding around the horsenest.
